Speaking

Prehabilitation, from both sides of the operating table.

Mathew Peter Silvaggio, MD, has spent sixteen years caring for patients through surgery. Then he prepared for his own major cancer operation, using the principles he now teaches. His talks give audiences the evidence, the story, and a plan they can use.

Why invite him

An expert who became the patient.

Few speakers can explain the science of surgical recovery and also describe what it feels like to live through it.

Clinical authority

Sixteen years as a physician at Trillium Health Partners. MD from McMaster University and residency at the University of Ottawa.

Lived experience

Diagnosed with two cancers at forty-two. In September 2025 he had an Ivor Lewis esophagectomy and went home on day five, less than half the typical stay.

Something to act on

Every talk ends with clear, practical steps. Audiences leave knowing what to do next, not just why it matters.

Talks

Three talks for three audiences.

Each talk can be shortened, lengthened or combined, and shaped to your event's theme.

01

Make the Wait Count: Preparing Your Body and Mind for Surgery

For patients, families & patient education programmes

Long waits for surgery are now common, and most patients are simply told to wait. This talk shows them how to turn that time into preparation.

Audiences will learn

  • The four pillars of prehabilitation: nutrition, physical fitness, breathing and mindset
  • A plan for any timeline, whether surgery is two weeks or six months away
  • Answers to today's common questions, from protein to weight-loss medications
02

From Wait List to Prep List: Bringing Prehabilitation into the Surgical Pathway

For physicians, nurses, allied health & hospital leaders

Surgical wait lists strain every system, but that time can be put to use. This talk turns the research into a plan a team can start using.

Audiences will learn

  • The current evidence for multimodal prehab, and who benefits most
  • How prehab fits alongside Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways
  • Practical, low-cost models a team can start with
03

Both Sides of the Table: What Becoming the Patient Taught a Physician

For general, wellness & fundraising audiences

A physician's story of becoming the patient, and what it taught him about control, resilience and preparation.

Audiences will learn

  • How to move from "Why me?" to "What can I do about this?"
  • Ways to find control when much is out of your hands
  • Why letting people in is a strength, not a weakness
